Phonology is the branch of Linguistics which investigates the ways in
which speech sounds are used systematically to form words and
utterances, while Phonetics is the study of the production of speech
sounds by speakers, their perception by hearers and their acoustic
properties. It is therefore important for language teachers to
understand why certain sounds are difficult for their learners to
produce, the speech organs involved in the production of certain
sounds, the rise and fall of tone and the word stress pattern. Each
language is unique and therefore to master a second or foreign
language one has to understand not only the sound system of that
language but also the rhythm, tone, pitch and intonation in order to
communicate clearly and effectively.
